(ASTM C150 - Standard Specification for Portland Cement)

Type I

Normal

Type II

Moderate sulfate resistance

Type III

High early strength

Type IV

 Low heat of hydration

Type V

High sulfate resistance

White Cement

Usually used for Architectural purposes

Blended Hydraulic Cements  (ASTM C595)

Type I S

Portland blast-furnace slag cement

Type I P

Portland-pozzolan cement

Type I (PM)

 Pozzolan-modified Portland cement

Type S

Slag cement

Type I (SM)

Slag-modified Portland cement

Masonry Cements

(ASTM C91) Used for mortar for masonry construction, parging and plaster (stucco).

Must never be used for making concrete.

Type N

Used in ASTM C 270 Type N and Type O mortars (may be used with Portland or blended cements to produce Type S and Type M mortars).

Type S

Used in ASTM C 270 Type S mortar (may be used with Portland or blended cements to produce Type M mortar)

Type M

Used in ASTM C 270 Type M mortar without the addition space of other cements or hydrated lime.

Expansive Cements

(ASTM C845) Expands slightly during the early hardening period after setting.

  • Type E-1 (K)

  • Type E-1 (M)

  • Type E-I (S)

  • Not necessarily covered by ASTM specifications:

  • Plastic Cement Used for making plaster and stucco

  • Oil Well Cement Used for sealing oil wells

  • Note: Because some types of cement may not be readily available in all sections of the United States, it is recommended to determine its availability before specifying a type of Portland cement.
